Blue Mountain Humane Society appoints Dian Ver Valen as new CEO

Blue Mountain Humane Society is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dian Ver Valen as its Chief Executive Officer. This decision comes after Dian's remarkable service as interim CEO and Business Operations Director, where she demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication.

During her time as interim CEO, Dian proved herself to be an invaluable asset to the organization, guiding it through a transitional period with finesse. Her extensive experience and deep commitment to the welfare of animals make her the perfect candidate to lead BMHS into its next chapter.

As Gary Asmus, representing the Board of Directors, stated, "Dian has consistently demonstrated her dedication and proficiency throughout her tenure with BMHS. Her ability to navigate challenges, coupled with her passion for our mission, makes her an excellent fit for the CEO role."

Dian's appointment marks a pivotal moment for BMHS as it embarks on strategic planning, renewed donor relationships, and the exploration of innovative revenue streams. Her vision for the organization aligns with BMHS's commitment to achieving even greater outcomes for the animals under its care.

"I’m honored to be asked to lead such an important organization in our community,” Dian said. “In my time serving BMHS as Business Operations Director, I’ve come to understand what a dedicated, passionate, and professional team of employees and volunteers we have supporting our mission here. I’m excited to be part of this team and to help us continue to grow and thrive.”

Dian has lived in the greater Walla Walla Valley for 13 years. Her most recent leadership role in the community before coming to BMHS was as editor of the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin, helping to lead that long-time local business through the pandemic and several other big transitions.

Blue Mountain Humane Society is a nonprofit organization that’s been active in Walla Walla County since 1967. In 2022, BMHS staff and volunteers cared for 1,820 animals, provided 3,338 spay/neuter surgeries, returned 438 lost pets to their homes, and found permanent homes for 1,250 companion animals.
