Volunteer Position Descriptions

There are many ways to help the animals when you volunteer! Whether you prefer to work hands-on with shelter pets, behind the scenes in the administrative office, or in the community at off-site events, we need your help! Volunteer positions are either scheduled on a weekly or monthly basis, or drop-in to provide flexibility. All volunteers are asked to commit to at least one 1-hour shift per month for a minimum of three months.

Administrative Assistant Volunteer – Help Blue Mountain Humane Society run smoothly by providing support in the administrative office. Volunteer tasks includes data entry, answering phone calls, photocopying, filing, and organizing.

Adoption Assistant Volunteer – Play match maker and help our adoptable animals find their furever homes by guiding the public through the adoption process. This volunteer position works closely with the customer service team to provide our community an excellent experience while choosing their new friend. An ideal candidate would provide consistent service in order to learn about the unique traits of each adoptable animal.

AM Animal Care Volunteer and PM Animal Care Volunteer – Help keep our animals happy, healthy, and clean! Volunteer tasks include cleaning kennels, basic housekeeping, feeding, exercising and providing enrichment including treat distribution. Opportunities include caring for cats, small and large dogs. An ideal candidate would be comfortable working hands on with our animal population and is able to maintain a consistent schedule of service on a weekly basis.

Cat Enrichment Volunteer – Help make our adoptable cats happy while they wait for their forever family! Volunteer tasks include providing enrichment, socialization and basic housekeeping for cats on the adoption floor.

Clinic Assistant Volunteer – Help sustain our mission to end pet overpopulation in the Walla Walla valley by caring for animals before and after their spay and neuter surgeries. Volunteer tasks include assisting staff prepare animals for surgery and comforting animals as they recover. An ideal candidate would be over 16 years old, comfortable interacting with sedated animals and able to maintain a consistent schedule of service on a weekly basis.

Customer Service Volunteer – Do you have excellent customer service skills? Volunteer tasks include greeting visitors, answering frequently asked questions, directing phone calls, processing and organizing donations and assisting the adoption specialist.

Dog Enrichment Volunteer – Provide our adoptable dogs the exercise and enrichment they need to thrive while they wait to be adopted. Volunteer tasks include interacting with adoptable dogs while providing them exercise, socialization, and enrichment including treat distribution. Be our eyes and ears and help us maintain safety protocol to facilitate positive interactions between the public and adoptable dogs.

Dog Walker Volunteer– Provide socialization, exercise, basic obedience commands, and enrichment to the dogs through walking and time outside the kennel. Dog Walker volunteer’s work with a team of staff and volunteers.

Event Assistant Volunteer – Help with the planning, preparation and execution of off-site events. Volunteer tasks include gathering event supplies, set up and tear down and animal handling. The ideal event assistant volunteer will be comfortable communicating with people from diverse backgrounds.  

Petco Assistant Volunteer – Help keep our adoptable cats housed at Petco happy and heathy while they wait for their furever home! Volunteer tasks include cleaning cages, feeding, and socializing with cats at Petco on a consistent basis. An ideal candidate would feel excited to provide services offsite at Petco and be able to maintain a consistent schedule of service on a weekly basis.

Playgroup Assistant Volunteer – Help socialize our adoptable dogs and get your morning exercise! Volunteer tasks include working alongside staff to provide adoptable dogs the opportunity to play with one another in a supervised environment. An ideal candidate would be over 16 years old, able to walk consistently for two hours, be comfortable working with large dogs and able to maintain a consistent schedule on a weekly basis.

Senior Center Visit Volunteer – Do you have a passion for animals and the elderly in our community? Volunteer tasks include transporting an adoptable animal from BMHS to a local senior center to provide joy to seniors in our community. An ideal candidate would have reliable transportation, expresses passion for connecting animals with the elderly in our community and is able to maintain a consistent schedule on a monthly basis.
