Last Chance Puppy Melts Hearts
Wallis was found abandoned in a ditch along Last Chance Road outside of Walla Walla, nearly frozen and starving. The medical staff at BMHS estimated he was within half an hour of freezing to death as well as being extremely emaciated. Wallis’ skin was cold to the touch and pale grey.
The Animal Care and Medical teams spent the whole afternoon reviving him with heated blankets and warm fluids delivered through an IV catheter. By the end of the day, he had started to stand on his own for a few seconds and had begun to feel warmer to the touch.
But there were still challenges left for Wallis to face. He was placed in a foster home and returned to the shelter regularly for medical check ups. After a few weeks, Hannah, the Animal Care Director, grew concerned over a swelling in his neck and jaw. Wallis had developed Strangles, a disease where lymph nodes become enlarged and the puppy’s face becomes inflamed. Dr. Norris began giving him steroids to reduce inflammation, and although he would probably survive, there was still a chance of him developing life-threatening consequences.
Now, several weeks later, he has recovered and will shortly be taken back into the humane society. But this time, it will be for a routine check-up and neutering to get him ready for adoption!
Wallis is happy, healthy, and hoping for a home after so many challenges. He is an inspiration and deserves a family full of love for him who will appreciate his courage.
