Phoebus

Phoebus has been at BMHS since February 29, 2024.

Phoebus is the longest-stay dog at Blue Mountain Humane Society, having been at the shelter for a year. He is two years old, which means that he has spent half his life at the shelter. Phoebus is a good-looking black and white boy who weighs 77 pounds. He is a graduate of the basic training program at the Washington State Penitentiary, and he has responded well to additional training he’s received at the shelter since his graduation. He has been on many outings with volunteers and does very well riding in the car. He is friendly and happy to meet all the people he encounters in these public settings, including children. He is energetic and particularly likes to play with tennis balls. He plays well with some dogs, especially female dogs, but is more reactive to other dogs. However, he responds well to training to lessen his dog reactivity.

Phoebus has experienced a year of stress by being in the shelter, and he needs a family who recognizes that he needs love and patience to help him settle into his new home.

If you would like to meet Phoebus, please fill out an application on the Blue Mountain Humane Society website in order to meet him in person (or dog). If you have other dogs, please bring them along to ensure compatibility.

Anybody adopting or fostering Phoebus has access to free lessons with an expert dog trainer.

A.C. Slater

A.C. Slater has been at BMHS since May 24, 2024.

A.C. Slater (or Slater, to his friends!) is a good choice for families or anybody looking for a sweet and loving dog. He has been at the shelter since May of 2024 but was in a foster home for many of those months. He is 2 and 3/4ths year old and weighs 62 pounds. He is known to be house-trained, walks nicely on a leash, and knows sit, stay, and shake. He is initially a little bit shy but likes people, and he is very loving and cuddly with his people. He likes other dogs, although he can sometimes bark at other dogs while walking on the leash. He does not like cats. He likes car rides. He is very trainable because he loves treats. If you are interested in meeting Slater, contact the staff at the Blue Mountain Humane Society, and, if you have other dogs, ask about setting up a meet and greet.

Ranger

Ranger has been at BMHS since August 24, 2024.

Ranger is a good choice for people looking for a playful, curious, energetic, and confident dog. He is a 2 and half year old dog who weighs 58 pounds, and is sized like a German Shepherd. He has been at the shelter since August 24, 2024, although he is currently in training at WSP. All reports are that he is doing very well there. He did well on outings he went on before he went to WSP. When going to an outdoor restaurant/bar, he rode nicely in the car, happily greeted everyone, sat and shook hands for treats, and was a perfect gentleman. He was quite popular with the customers! When he visited a college campus, he loved spotting squirrels, meeting new people, and exploring all the sights and smells. Loud noises didn’t bother him at all. On that car ride, he showed his sweet side — he prefers to cuddle on a lap while taking in the view. He has also done well in his dog play groups as well but often barks at other dogs when he is on a leash. As a long-stay dog, Ranger comes with free training from a professional dog trainer. If you have other dogs at home, you should schedule a time with the staff to bring your dogs here to meet Ranger. Fill out an adoption application online and the staff will provide you with more information on the adoption process.

Charlie

Charlie has been at BMHS since August 30, 2024.

Charlie is a perfect choice for people who are looking for a calm, gentle, and loving dog. He is 12 years old, but he is healthy and energetic, and seems like a much younger dog. He came to BMHS on August 30, 2024. He weighs 60 pounds but presents as a medium-sized dog – he is pretty solid! He is very affectionate, both with his foster family and with new people he meets. He loves being petted but prefers not to be hugged. He is house trained and a good car rider. He knows "sit" and "shake", and he walks politely on a leash. Everything known about him suggests that he would be good with other dogs, cats, and children. He likes short hikes, and he loves to hang out and watch movies. If you have other dogs at home, set a time with the staff for them to meet him.

Makila

Makila has been at BMHS since October 8, 2024.

Makila is a great dog for a family or for anybody looking for a friendly and laid-back dog who gets along with a wide variety of dogs and people. Makila came to the shelter on October 8, 2024, and the staff is mystified as to why she has not been adopted already. She is a beautiful girl, with attractive black speckles on her muzzle and a lovely tail. Makila is 3 years old and about 45 pounds, so not an overly large dog. She is easy to walk; she has good leash manners and is happy to meet others but not focused on it. She loves car rides and playing in water. She likes to chase balls but not obsessively. She is very affectionate and loves head and belly rubs. She leans on people petting her, which is very cute. We don’t know how she does with cats, but BMHS can provide guidance about how to successfully introduce dogs and cats. She has a wide range of vocalizations, as huskies do, but she is not a constant talker. If you have other dogs at home, fill out an application and set a time with the staff for her to meet your dogs. As a long-stay dog, she comes with free training from a professional trainer.

J.B.

J.B. has been at BMHS since October 11, 2024.

J.B. is a great choice for people looking for a dog who is energetic, affectionate, and receptive to training. He recently graduated the Washington State Penitentiary training program, which makes him particularly desirable to adopt now, with his training fresh in his mind. He is 2 years old and 59 pounds. He loves people and behaves well in public on walks. He does not react to other dogs, and he is greatly improved regarding pulling on a leash, although he still has some work to do. He knows “sit,” “stay,” and “lie down,” and is treat-motivated, which will help with further training. When he runs around off leash, he likes to jump straight in the air (J.B. is short for “jumping bean”). It’s very cute, and he does not jump fences. He offers gentle face kisses and nuzzles to people he loves and likes to cuddle to be petted. He enjoys high-energy play with other dogs. If you have another dog at home, set a time with the staff for your dog to meet him. Just fill out an adoption application online and the staff will let you know where to go from there in the adoption process.
