Otto's Journey from Walla Walla to Portland
At Blue Mountain Humane Society, it truly takes a village to save the lives of homeless pets in need. Recently, an extraordinary team effort allowed us to transfer a special dog named Otto to our friends at Oregon Humane Society in Portland.
Otto arrived at BMHS as a stray with a persistent cough. Our medical team initially treated him for suspected kennel cough. However, when Otto's condition did not improve, chest x-rays at Associated Veterinary Medical Center revealed a shocking discovery — Otto had what appeared to be a wire lodged in his chest or lung area.
We suspect Otto may have ingested the twist top wire from discarded hamburger packaging he was seen passing in his stool after he arrived at BMHS. The wire may have migrated into his chest, causing pneumonia. After an extended stay in foster care, and treatment for the pneumonia, it became clear Otto would require advanced diagnostics and specialized surgery to survive.
That's when our Shelter Operations Director Hannah Granchukoff reached out to Oregon Humane Society, knowing they have the facilities and expertise to tackle difficult medical cases like Otto's. Amazingly, they agreed to take him!
Next came the challenge of transporting Otto the 240 miles from Walla Walla to Portland. Our dedicated volunteers Jane Hashimoto and Nancy Seright stepped up without hesitation. They made the 3.5 hour drive straight through, with Otto riding comfortably the whole way. Upon arrival, Otto charmed the OHS staff with his sweet personality and requests for belly rubs.
While Otto still faces a long road to recovery, he is now in the very best hands. We are so grateful to everyone involved in Otto's rescue — from our medical team and fosters to the staff at AVMC and OHS, and especially our volunteer transport heroes Jane and Nancy.
It's this kind of collaboration, compassion and commitment that allows us to give homeless animals like Otto a second chance at a healthy, happy life.
