Get to know Jack

Puppies come and puppies go, but some of our adult doggos have been here for awhile. They’re ready to go home! So every day this week, we’re going to do a little feature on one of these deluxe doggies who we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know during their weeks or months here. Meet our diamonds in the Ruff.

The first thing you should know about Jack is that he is a Good Boy. Basically, every time you hear Jack’s name mentioned around here, you immediately hear someone else pipe up “Jack? He’s such a good boy.” In fact, he inspired this week of posts – a volunteer said “How is Jack still here?! We need to do something about that!”

A few ways that Jack is a good dog:

He’s good at walks! He gives a few little tugs at the very beginning of a walk just so you know he’s ready to go – and he’s very, very good at not pulling. He also really likes walks… If he sees you headed his way with a leash, that perky tail of his starts wagging before you’re halfway across the room. This morning, after we put on his leash, he picked up his favorite squeaky chew toy to bring along with him, as he trotted towards the door! It’s adorable.

He’s potty trained! First thing in the morning at the Blue Mountain Humane Society, there are a lot of dogs woof-ing and doing the tippy-tap dance ready to go outside (if you have ever had a dog, you’re familiar), and some dogs aren’t patient enough to wait til we get them out. But Jack is! Good boy, Jack.

He’s good at “sit” – particularly when there’s a treat involved. One of our favorite things about Jack is how gentle he is taking treats – he’ll very delicately take one from your hand. Alternately, though, he likes trying to catch them in the air. (He’s not very good at it. But he has fun trying!)

He’s gentle with his snuggles. He’s a pretty big guy, and he’s pretty strong… but when it comes to affection, he’s not all galumphing wiggles like a younger dog might be. He’s happy to lay down at your feet and chew a toy… but he’d rather be at your feet than anywhere else.

When he first came to us, his owners told us he was a Jack Russell Terrier… which, well, isn’t quite true. He’s got the right profile and the right perky tail, but he’s a bit bigger than that. It’s okay – he doesn’t need a fancy breed, Jack-the-dog is great the way he is.

Jack has been here since early February – but that’s not quite the whole story. He first came to us because someone in his family was allergic. At the beginning, we had a number of people come in and meet him… who then went home with other dogs (good dogs. Just… not Jack). Then he was at a foster home (which he loved). Then he went on a home trial with an adopter who decided it wasn’t a good fit, as he kept escaping their yard (that foster home he loved was a few blocks away… he was headed over there)! He was back with his foster family for a while, and now he is back at the shelter. He clearly really, really wants to know where he belongs, and deserves a family who can love him unconditionally the same way he loves them.

Jack has some separation anxiety, and can feel a little sad – which we totally understand. He’s been through a lot of changes, and we all know that can be tough to cope with. He’s good at taking his meds, and doing a good job working with our animal care team to gain confidence and security.

Jack has a few special requests for his forever home. He needs a home with no cats (they’re a little too exciting). He needs a home where he can be the only dog (again… too exciting). And he needs people who are able to be around all the time. We don’t mean that you need to play non-stop fetch… in fact, Jack would probably like it best if a lot of your time included cuddles on the couch. Someone who works from home or a family with older kids would be a great fit, so he doesn’t have to spend his days all alone at home.

We’re rooting for Jack to find a home with people who want to take the time to keep training him. He’s a good learner.

What do you get out of the deal?

  • A loyal, loving pup who wants to make you the center of his world.

  • Mild-mannered sweet cuddles.

  • A delighted doggy smile.

  • A tail that keeps on wagging.

  • A soft coat to pet.

  • Someone to sit at your feet, so you never have to be alone.

  • A devoted four-legged best friend.

If you know what it means to make a change in your life and keep on growing… Jack might be the perfect dog for you. He’s just waiting to find his new best friend… and he’s been waiting for you for a very long time. He wants to go home, now.

If he sounds like your guy, fill out an adoption application.

Even if you’re not ready to adopt a forever dog, Jack would love it if you would consider being a foster paw-rent.
