Blue Mountain Humane Society extends contract with Walla Walla County, ensures staff safety during transition

NOTE: For Walla Walla County animal control needs, please call Walla Walla Emergency Services Communications dispatch at 509-527-1960.

Blue Mountain Humane Society is pleased to announce a 90-day contract extension with Walla Walla County, allowing the County time to hire an animal control officer and demonstrating our commitment to animal welfare and a smooth transition of animal control services. As part of this extension, BMHS is dedicated to prioritizing the safety and well-being of our valued staff members.

The primary focus of nonprofit organizations such as BMHS revolves around rescue, rehabilitation, adoption, education, and promoting responsible pet ownership. The long-term provision of animal control services falls outside the scope of the organization’s mission.

During this transitional period, BMHS will continue to collaborate with the County to ensure a seamless transfer of animal control services. We are working closely with County law enforcement agencies to safeguard the well-being of our dedicated staff members when they are out in the field.

BMHS reaffirms its unwavering dedication to the welfare of animals in Walla Walla County. Our sheltering services will continue without interruption, providing compassionate care and finding forever homes for companion animals. Animal licensing services will also be maintained, promoting responsible pet ownership.

"We want to emphasize that while we’re doing everything in our power to ensure staff safety during this 90-day extension, the provision of long-term animal control services does not align with our primary mission," said Amanda Wernert, CEO at BMHS. "We remain committed to working collaboratively with the County during this transitional phase and are happy to continue to provide sheltering services for the County."

For inquiries or further information regarding animal control or sheltering services in Walla Walla County, please contact Blue Mountain Humane Society at 509-525-2452.

Please note that although BMHS will no longer provide animal control services after this 90-day period, we will continue to provide sheltering services for the county.
